44.6% of drug addicts were untraceable

The Dewan Rakyat was told that about 27,000 or 32.7 per cent of the 82,882 former drug addicts being monitored in this country had been fully rehabilitated from the addiction, compared to 17,000 or 21.5 per cent who returned to drugs.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said from the total number, 1.2 per cent were reported dead, while 44.6 per cent were untraceable.

"This clearly showed the effectiveness of the comprehensive rehabilitation programme which covers various aspects including spiritual and skills development,” he said during question time today.

In efforts to reduce a recurrence to drug addiction, Syed hamid said those who were not confident of returning to the community were being monitored under the Desa Damai programme. "Under the programme, they will be given suitable training to boost their resilience,” he said.

Up to last month, there were 7,335 drug addicts being treated at the drug rehabilitation centre nationwide.
